How to choose a great mattress.

A good mattress is one of the most important investments you'll ever make in your personal well-being. Decent mattresses are expensive, but as you're shopping, keep in mind that most inner-spring mattresses come with at least a ten-year warranty, and foam mattresses can be under warranty for two decades. To get the best mattress, follow these tips.

  1. 1. Take along with you whoever will be sleeping on the mattress. Don't try to pick a mattress for someone else, as the results could be disastrous.

  2. 2. Try many mattresses before you choose one. Don't just sit on the edge of the mattress. Take off your shoes, and assume your favorite sleeping position. Get in and out of the bed to see how movement affects your partner.

  3. 3. Get information about your choices. Make sure the ticking is made of quality materials like cotton or synthetics. If you're buying an inner-spring mattress, check the spring count. A queen mattress should have at least 375 springs.

  4. 4. Lie down on the best mattresses for at least a few minutes each. A good mattress will allow the curves of your body to sink in but will still support you so that your spine is in a straight line.

  5. 5. Figure out your options and buy a mattress. If you and your partner prefer different types of mattresses, ask about a split mattress, which will allow you each to sleep as per your own comfort level. Also, your mattress will probably come with box spring options - standard or low-profile, split king, etc. Know exactly what you want before you take your new mattress home.
